Initially, I never really considered dentistry that much going through high school or even undergraduate until toward the end of undergrad. I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field. Had a friend that was considering dentistry, so I started looking more into it, and I feel like dentistry found me more than me seeking it out. Because I started doing dental research and looked in and loved the science mixed with art aspect of dentistry and medicine and surgery, all things that I was interested in together, and the diversity of what dentistry can offer and what you can offer to patients.
I did almost all of my education at the University of Kentucky here in Lexington. I did an undergraduate in biology and chemistry. Then after that, I went to dental school at UK and then did a one-year hospital-based residency at UK.
Throughout residency, I got continuing education and certified in IV sedation, so that was my start, but even prior to residency, I had taken some implant continuing education because I'm really passionate about implants and something I'm very interested in, so I did that toward the end of dental school, actually setting myself up to practice placing implants in residency. Since then, I've done a lot of even more implant continuing education, even recently a few of the doctors have went. So a lot of my continuing education has been about IV sedation, implants, and surgery.
Patients come in with an issue, and we can fix it that day or that appointment or in the very near future for them. So there's not that many health care professions that I feel like when they come in with the issue that we can almost immediately resolve it a large majority of the time, and whether that's the patient's in pain or has an aesthetic issue or whatever the case may be, a lot of times we can have a pretty instant fix, and so I find that really gratifying within our profession.
