It used to be that if you needed a crown done or a cap done on your tooth, dentists would get a goopy impression and send that to a lab. Then they would make a temporary crown that sometimes would come off, sometimes would break, but you would wear that for two or three weeks while the lab makes your crown. Then we'd try that in, get you back in, have to get you numb again, put that crown back on.
We're now able to make that final crown in the office in about 45 minutes. So, if you needed a crown or a cap on your tooth, say a tooth is broken, big filling fell out, whatever the reason, we're able to prepare that tooth for a crown, get a digital impression with a computer and a camera, and then make that crown here in the office out of the exact same material that the lab would be making that out of. That process takes about 45 minutes, and that time is just downtime for the patient, and we try everything in and put that on.
The big advantage of that, a couple of them: that you don't have to come back for a second visit is one, but that you don't have to get numb a second time. That anesthetic typically is going to still be active while we put that crown on, so the patient is comfortable.
I started with CEREC when I first got out of school. There's an education center in Arizona, and I went through their entire curriculum, and afterwards they asked me if I would be a mentor. And what a CEREC mentor is, is basically a teacher. There's maybe 30 to 50 people in every one of these classes, and there's only two lead instructors, so they need assistants to be able to help them, and those are various CEREC doctors across the country who come in and dedicate their time to help other people learn how to do this. That's what I do when I go out to Arizona to help with these courses. I also train doctors locally here in Kentucky and a couple surrounding states on new CEREC technology that comes out on best practices for their offices, just on how to use the system and be efficient with it.

Speed Up the Dental Crown Process With CEREC Technology
Since a crown repairs a damaged tooth and restores normal oral function, you obviously want to get it as soon as possible. With many general dentists, it takes at least a few days. That’s because they’ll measure you for a crown but then outsource the production to an outside dental lab. You’ll wear a temporary crown in the meantime.
At Beaumont Family Dentistry, you may not have to wear a temporary restoration while you wait. We use a digital system called CEREC that enables us to design and create a custom crown for you in about an hour and a half in most cases. Our same-day dental crowns are also:
- Natural Looking – Since our crowns are made of porcelain, you’ll never have metal showing at your gumline.
- Long-Lasting – Porcelain is a strong and stain-resistant material. Under typical conditions, a crown should last a decade or more.
We use CEREC for the majority of our crowns, but you can get traditional crowns made of e.max porcelain or BruxZir solid zirconia instead.
Fill Out Your Smile With a Dental Bridge
If you’re missing a tooth or even several teeth, you can replace them with a dental bridge. Our dentists attach a fixed bridge to two crowns, which are supported by existing teeth. Your bridge can also be supported by dental implants. With implants, you’ll avoid the bone loss that can occur with a traditional bridge.
With either a traditional bridge or an implant-supported bridge, you won’t need to remove it for cleaning. Like our dental crowns, we can make your bridge with CEREC if you’d like to minimize waiting.
