Most of us will never be world-class athletes like the ones who competed in the recent Olympic games. However, our team at Beaumont Family Dentistry believes that everyone deserves world-class dental care.
A great example of this is the professional teeth whitening that we offer at each of our dentist offices in Lexington, KY. There’s a reason teeth whitening remains one of the most popular treatments in cosmetic dentistry.
That’s also a big reason that you see so many products billing themselves as whitening products on television and on their packaging in the toothpaste aisle.
The best way to whiten your smile, however, remains professional teeth whitening which you can find in our office.
The Difference Between Average And World Class
We are going to turn back to the Olympics for a moment.
We want to compare those world-class athletes with the average runner you may find in a 5K road race. (We aren’t criticizing anyone who is running for health. We are just making a comparison based on times.)
According to Runner’s World, the average 5K runner will finish the race somewhere between 28 minutes, 45 seconds and 35 minutes.
By comparison, Mohamed Farah of Great Britain won the 10K in this year’s Olympics in a time of 27 minutes, 5.17 seconds.
He didn’t just run faster than an average runner. He also ran twice as far.
You could say he did more work in less time.
This is why we see our KöR® whitening products as more like a world-class athlete. When compared to a commercial whitening product, KöR is going to do more work in the same amount of time or even less time than anything you will buy on the shelf.
Why Professional Whitening Works Better
A couple years ago, the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs took a close look at the various whitening products available today.
As teeth whitening was growing in popularity, so were the number of whitening products that people could buy. The first thing we want to mention is that the council did not consider whitening toothpaste to be a bleaching product. In other words, whitening toothpaste isn’t going to do much more than remove surface stains from your teeth.
The white strips and the whitening gels you can buy off the shelf are bleaching products. These will remove some deeper stains from your teeth thanks to the bleaching agents found in these products. Typically, these means they include hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide (which breaks down into hydrogen peroxide).
The ADA learned that professional whitening products, like the ones we offer at Beaumont Family Dentistry, can contain 8 to 11 times higher concentrations of the bleaching agent than commercial ones.
These means professional whitening products can go deeper and remove more of your stains, often in less time than their commercial counterparts.
Are professional products more expensive? Yes, for a single treatment.
When you consider that it may take multiple treatments with commercial products to achieve something close to comparable results, those costs savings don’t look as great (and neither will your smile).
At the same time, the ADA council warned the public against overuse of any whitening products because of potential risks. That’s all more reason to talk to the dentists in any of Lexington offices before you consider any whitening treatment.
All Professional Whitening Products Are Not The Same
If you look long enough, you will find all kinds of whitening products. Some even use lights to “activate” the bleaching agents.
But what matters, in the end, are results. Will the product you are using make your teeth whiter?
We know from our experience helping patients that KöR will do just that. KöR is different than other professional whitening products for a couple reasons.
First, whitening products are made to be reactive. When they are stored at room temperature, the bleaching agents can start to react. This means the products may have lost a good deal of its potency before it’s applied to your teeth.
KöR keeps its products refrigerated from the time they are made until they are delivered to our office. This preserves their stain-removing power.
Second, KöR uses a unique tri-barrel packaging. this keeps the reactive ingredients separated until the moment they are used. This is yet another step KöR has taken to make sure patients like you receive the maximum benefits from their product.
That’s also why we use KöR for our patients.
