Got my life back – TMD Problems
When I first came to Beaumont Family Dentistry I was a complete mess. I had been suffering with major TMD symptoms for over a year. I had nearly every symptom there was. Could barely open my mouth, pain, and many ear symptoms. The ear ringing was terrible. I was totally depressed and miserable. Couldn’t take it anymore and had to get help. After a few months my life is back and I barely have any symptoms now and what I do have is barely noticeable. I hardly clench my teeth at night and if I do it’s nothing like I was doing before. If I hadn’t went to Beaumont I would still be a total mess. Dr. Takacs and Joy know what they are doing and if you are suffering with TMD I strongly encourage you to visit them. Thank you all for getting me back on track!!! I don’t know what I would have done without you all!!!- Clint Forth
Steve: So I'm Steve, I'm a patient here at Beaumont Family Dentistry. I'm doing this testimonial kind of to help promote the fact that people with sleep apnea, particularly obstructive sleep apnea, have alternatives to the CPAP machine that most people are more familiar with. I myself do not tolerate the CPAP machine. I have moderate to severe sleep apnea actually. But with the machine that blows pressure into your lungs, the positive pressure machine, I was very intolerant of it. And it was very uncomfortable to wear obviously, it's obtrusive at night. I bloated up my stomach, which made things very uncomfortable. There's the aspect that you have to clean the device every day, change the water. If you're traveling, it's very difficult to have to travel with.
So one of the other options is a mechanical advancement device or an oral appliance and it helps protrude the gel forward and opens up the airway, and it's literally just like wearing a retainer at night. It's much more comfortable. You can travel with it, you clean it just in the bathroom with your toothbrush maybe. Very simple maintenance and it's not so intrusive on your life, your quality of life is better. For me, I don't have the abdominal distension. I sleep well at night, I'm waking up restful. My cognition is better, my breathing is better since I also have some breathing issues. But it's been very effective and part of the reason I came here is because I am a veteran. I receive a lot of my care through the VA and despite some of the reports that the care at the VA is really slacking, I actually received excellent care from the dental department. I'm very fortunate to be able to go there.
Unfortunately, just like with any other practice, they weren't able to provide this device to me and I came to Dr. Takacs and literally had this device within three weeks and it has changed my quality of life tremendously. And the quality of professionalism that I receive here is phenomenal. It is a family practice and they're very true to that. There are family members that work here. Dr. Takacs has family members, Shawna who first helped me, has family members. And it really is this family setting of individuals that if you were going to have Thanksgiving dinner since that's coming up, they're the family members that you'd want to be sitting with.
So I highly recommend, and I have recommended this practice to many of my friends already, and I hope they take advantage of it. I hope that people will look into some of the research that's out there that supports oral appliances and it'll make your quality of life a lot better. And this is something that they can work with you on financing, they did with myself, with my insurance company, and it's just a stellar practice. So I would check it out.
Carrie: In 2006, I suffered nerve damage to my face that became just excruciatingly painful and I've tried everything. I tried multiple doctors. I tried a pain clinic. I tried even a brain surgeon. The answers I kept getting from everybody was there's nothing else we can do for you. For the next six years I really just kind of suffered through just this awful excruciating burning pain in my face and I came in one day just to get a filling fixed I think and Dr. Takacs mentioned the TruDenta program that it was getting ready to start here and she asked if I was interested in trying it and I was at that point I thought, I really have nothing to lose at this point. And so I came in once a week for about 12 weeks and it involved measuring my range of motion in my jaw and my neck every week we tested that. We also looked at my bite, analyzed where some problem areas were that could be causing me to tense up and maybe make the pain worse.
Joy was able to do series of therapy every week that started with cold laser and ultrasound therapy as well as massage and a tens unit. And the combination of all four of those as well as some essential oils, lotions that she uses. I don't know why it works, but at the end of those 12 weeks, I mean, my pain went from about a 15 on a scale of one to 10 to about a one. During TruDenta it was great. Joy and Shauna and even Dr. Takacs, they really became my friends through the whole process, not just my doctor and staff and everything and I looked forward to coming in every week. They took really good care of me. Since TruDenta it's been about three years and I've been pretty much pain-free and I've been able to read again and I actually now get paid to read and write reviews for a popular magazine. So they not only took my pain level down to where it was completely manageable, but they also gave me my dream job.
