Same-Day Crowns

CEREC Same-Day Crowns in Lexington, KY

When a patient needs a crown, typically in the past we would have to send it out to a lab. We might have a two to three week turnaround period where they’re wearing a temporary crown. That temporary crown they could lose, it could crack, there’s a lot other things that could happen to that. [CEREC 00:00:16] restoration allows us to place the crown that day. That’s their final permanent crown. There’s no coming back/. There’s typically, it’s done in one appointment in just a couple of hours.

CEREC also allows us to do impressions for things like Invisalign and other ortho appliances, instead of taking a [goopy 00:00:34] impression where it might not be accurate, we’re able to send out a digital impression to the lab to get much more accurate trays, much more accurate appliances in general.

We’re also able to do guided implant surgery with CEREC. That just allows us to get a much more accurate placement of an implant, kind of like driving with a GPS versus just thinking you know how to get there.

Crowns are one of our most common, reliable restorations available. At Beaumont Family Dentistry, 90 percent of the crowns we make are CEREC crafted. CEREC technology allows us to offer beautiful, strong, custom-made same day crown in just one visit to our office. Traditional crowns often require at least two visits to the dental office – but we can do it in just one! Read on to learn more about CEREC technology and how it can help you get the strong, beautiful restoration you need.

Why might I need a dental crown?

Crowns are specially designed pieces of porcelain (or other material) that are used to restore damaged teeth. You may need a crown if you have a tooth that is severely damaged or decayed, if you have had a root canal recently, if you have a large filling that is failing, or to treat cosmetic issues. Ask your dentist if a crown is the best solution for your particular issue.

What is CEREC?

CEREC is a special type of machine that is used just for creating crowns. Instead of using the usual wax molds for taking impressions for your crown, we use CEREC and take impressions digitally. CEREC stands for CEramic REConstruction. Simply put, it means our doctors can restore damaged teeth fast and effectively using a durable ceramic material that matches the natural color of your other teeth.

Other types of crowns are sometimes made with a metallic base and a porcelain overlay. Our CEREC crowns are often all porcelain. That means you will never see any metal peeking out from your gumline. In some cases, we will use precious metals or zirconia inside the crown for strength and stability.

Your specific situation will determine what is necessary. Ask your doctor if our traditional porcelain crown will work for you, or if you will need some kind of reinforcement material. Either way, we will work with you to get you the durable, beautiful crown you need.

How does CEREC work?

After taking your digital impressions, we will create your new crown using our in-office CEREC milling machine. Your new dental crown is then finalized in our in-house lab to match exactly the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth. Our patients are always pleased with the appearance of our crowns! Once the crown is finished, your doctor will bond it into place. This does not take long, meaning you can leave our office with your new crown that day! No more waiting weeks for the lab to create your crown. CEREC allows you to have a beautiful, durable restoration in just one day.

Combining CEREC and e.Max Technology

For your biting teeth, we use a revolutionary material, e.max, which is pretty much unbreakable. While being extremely strong, e.max is gentle to your opposing teeth and will not wear them down. In addition, an e.max crown is made out of a single piece of porcelain placed in our CEREC machine. Traditional porcelain crowns are made out of layered porcelain or porcelain overlays – e.max eliminates the weakness in this design.

Temporary Crown Care

Protect your tooth by effectively caring for your temporary crown. Avoid flossing around your temporary crown (try a water flosser instead!), and don’t eat hard, chewy food like caramels, gum, or taffy. If you experience any discomfort, take an ibuprofen to ease the pain. If it persists, call the office. It is normal for a temporary crown to shift slightly and be sensitive to hot/cold foods, but it should not be very painful. It is possible for a temporary crown to come out. If that happens, use denture adhesive, vaseline, or even temporary dental repair material to put the crown back in place for the next day or two until you can get to our office.
