During Your Treatment

I’m available for patients to do hand and arm massages. They bring me in if patients are apprehensive or nervous. There’s a lot of kind of fear and anxiety for a lot of people who have had bad experiences in the past, so they tend to respond well having somebody come in. I like to say I’m the official hand holder at Beaumont Family Dentistry, because sometimes I literally will just hold a patient’s hand. Since we know through studies that any type of touch tends to produce good results as far as lowering people’s blood pressure and their anxiety.

We do a little bit of everything. If you come and get your teeth cleaned and you say, “Hey, I’d love to have a hand massage,” if I’m available then I’ll come in and we work hands and arms. If your jaw locks up, a lot of people have TMJ issues and holding their mouth open for long periods of time can cause their jaw to not want to close, so I’ll come in and kind of work that out so that they can go about their day once they leave the office.

I also work with Dr. [Takiss 00:01:07] with her TruDenta patients, and a lot like her, that’s kind of become my passion, is helping people in chronic pain. We work with people who have chronic headaches, migraines, TMJ issues. We get people in here who have jaw pain but then it also may be ear pain, ringing, fullness of the ear, somebody who’s had headaches for years and years and has never found relief anywhere else. It’s definitely Dr. [Takiss 00:01:37]’s passion is this comprehend dental office where we don’t just clean your teeth, we don’t just make your smile pretty; we also can actually affect your health.

During your treatment, we offer a wide range of comfort options to all of our patients. In addition to our sedation options, we offer professional hand and arm massages, paraffin hand dips, lip balm in case of dryness, headphones to occupy your ears, cozy pillows and blankets, and safety glasses to protect your eyes. You will also notice our Tempur-Pedic padded dental chairs. At the end of your treatment, we also offer warm towels to soothe you. We go to great lengths to make sure you are comfortable throughout your visit to our office.

Sedation Dentistry Options

We offer a few different types of sedation. We can do [inaudible] sedation, which is just laughing gas. We can call in a Valium, which allows people just to relax a little bit. We also do an in-office oral sedation, which are medication that you take to help you sleep the night before, and then the morning of the appointment you take more medication and we just monitor you. Really just allows you to relax. Some people go to sleep on it, some people don’t.

The same thing with IV sedation. We’ll also give you something the night before to help you relax, help you sleep. Morning of the appointment you come in, and it’s an IV that’s in your arm, more to help you relax just so we can get the appointment done. Really, our goal is just to get you comfortable.

A big part of relieving the dental anxiety of our patients often comes from our dental sedation options. We offer three levels of dental sedation that allow our patients to completely relax and feel at ease. The types of sedation we offer are:

  • Inhaled sedation – A gas that is inhaled to cause relaxation. Great for nervous kids or patients with just a little bit of dental anxiety.
  • Oral sedation – A medication taken orally that produces a heavier level of sedation. Used for longer procedures or for patients with a greater fear of dental work.
  • IV sedation – Offered only at our Beaumont location. IV sedation produces a sleep-like state and is used for long or complicated procedures or for people with a great fear of visiting the dentist.

Please note that we here at Beaumont Family Dentistry in Lexington, KY offers only inhaled sedation for children. However, all three types of dental sedation are safe and effective at making you feel comfortable during a procedure. We are dedicated to helping you feel as relaxed as possible throughout your visit, and sedation dentistry is one way we can achieve that goal.
