Doctor Erica Higginbotham on Dental Anxiety
I tell patients all the time from the very beginning, if they have dental anxiety about coming into our office, it's okay. I've known since I was 18, and I'm obviously much older than that now, that patients don't really enjoy coming to the dentist most of the time. We do have those patients who really like coming in to see us, and we appreciate them, but we know that there's a lot of anxiety that comes into someone invading your personal space, and there's a lot of anxiety too because a lot of times people don't know what's really happening to them.
And so especially when we treat kids, I like to take them step by step through the pro-cess of showing them what we're doing so that they understand, and I think even for adults, patient education helps alleviate a lot of that fear, because if you understand from the beginning this is what your problem is and this is how we're going to help you fix it, then it helps alleviate some of that anxiety of knowing what we're doing and why we're doing it. So I think that's a huge portion of helping talk patients through some of that dental anxiety.
Now, some patients, it doesn't matter. We could talk till we were blue in our face and it wouldn't matter. They still have a lot of dental anxiety, and some of that is because of past history of having bad experiences, and we have ways of helping patients to get through that anxiety. We offer (inaudible) for patients, typically called laughing gas, so a lot of patients will do very well with just that along with their treatment. But also, we do offer in our practices both oral sedation and IV sedation, which obviously is using a drug to help calm patients down so they can deal with the fact that this is the situation they're in where they need to be helped through the appointment, and we understand. It's not something that is shunned. It's a way to help patients make it through the process and get the care that they really need.

Rest Easy With Dental Sedation
As part of our commitment to providing the most comfortable dental treatment in Central Kentucky, we offer our patients three great ways to relieve their anxiety and get much-needed smile care. Take your choice of:
- Inhaled sedation with laughing gas. This mild sedation will help you relax and forget about being at the dentist. It’s safe even for children!
- Oral conscious sedation in pill form. An FDA-approved medication will make you feel groggy and completely relaxed.
- IV sedation will put you in a sleep-like state. You won’t remember anything about your procedure afterward. This sedation method is wonderful for those with extreme dental anxiety.
