When we’re talking about your comfort during dental implant placement, it helps to get a better understanding of what the process is.
First, some basics. When you lose a tooth, you lose both the visible portion of the tooth (called the crown) and the bony structure that connects your tooth to your jaw bone (the root). So, it stands to reason that if you’re looking for the most secure way to replace a tooth, you want to replace both parts. Well, it’s possible with a dental implant!
Dental implants are small posts made of biocompatible metal that serve as artificial tooth roots. When you come to Beaumont Family Dentistry for a dental implant, we’ll first review your dental and medical histories to make sure you’re a great candidate for this treatment. We’ll also assess your jaw bone to ensure it’s dense enough to support the artificial tooth root.
When it comes time to actually place the dental implant, we’ll thoroughly numb the area to ensure your comfort. Then, we’ll gently insert the dental implant into the jaw bone.
We’ll then give the implant some time to heal. During this period, a process called osseointegration will occur, allowing the bone to actually fuse to the dental implant. This is what allows dental implants to be so secure and reliable. Your prosthetic essentially just becomes a part of you!
Then, you’ll come back to have the dental implant restored. During this phase of your treatment, we’ll top your dental implant with an abutment, or connector piece, that holds an artificial tooth (or set of teeth) in place. A dental implant often anchors a dental crown, which is a single-tooth prosthetic. But dental implants can also be used to hold dental bridges in place.
Thanks to anesthesia that thoroughly numbs the area, there’s usually little discomfort involved in the placement of dental implants. In fact, many patients say that the procedure is less painful than a routine tooth extraction.
