Should You Get Braces Or Veneers?

You’ve seen the same smile in the mirror for years, but you aren’t happy about it.

You are at a good place in your career, but you have this nagging feeling that your teeth may be holding you back.

You try to put on a confident face, but you have been bothered by the appearance of your teeth for a long time. Maybe your teeth are crooked. Maybe you have a couple gaps or one big gap in your smile. Maybe you think your teeth are too crowded.

In any case, you are self-conscious about it (especially at work) and you want to change that.

If you come to any Beaumont Family Dentistry office in Lexington, then we can discuss your options and help you decide if orthodontic care or cosmetic dentistry can help you.

The Upside Of Orthodontics

More and more adults are going through orthodontic treatment. What was once considered a rite of passage for teenagers has become normal and acceptable for adults.

One of the main reasons adults decide to get braces or alternative orthodontic care is to improve the appearance of their smiles. Having a crooked, crowded, or gapped smile can affect your self-confidence, and this can change how you interact with your co-workers as well as potential clients and customers.

But dentists like straight teeth for another reason, too. Straight teeth are easier to clean, which means they are easier to keep healthy. When your teeth are straight, there are fewer places for bacteria, plaque, and tartar to hide inside your mouth.

By straightening your teeth, your daily brushing and flossing (you are doing both every day, right?) will be even more effective.

Now, you may be aware that traditional braces can take two years or more to straighten your teeth. This can discourage some people from seeking orthodontic care. Just because more adults are wearing braces, that doesn’t mean you want to wear them for two years.

We offer a few options, two of which may be particularly appealing.

Fastbraces® live up to their name. This system uses unique triangular brackets instead of the rectangular or square brackets you will find with traditional braces.

This makes Fastbraces® look different, but it’s also the reason they can be considered “fast braces.” In most cases, patients can complete their treatment with Fastbraces® in a year or less.

For some patients, the thought of wearing any kind of braces for any amount of time is unacceptable. Thankfully, that’s not your only orthodontic option.

You could try Invisalign instead. This system uses clear, plastic aligners to push your teeth into evenly spaced, parallel, and straight positions.

With Invisalign, you change your aligners every two weeks or so. With each switch, your teeth get a little closer to their final position. The treatment takes about 12 months for most patients.

And many people will never realize you are wearing them because the aligners are clear.

The Versatility Of Veneers

Some patients aren’t as worried about having straight teeth as they are about looking like they have straight teeth. This is where cosmetic dentistry, specifically veneers, can fix your smile.

One of the biggest advantages of getting veneers is they can improve your smile in a matter of weeks. Whether you get porcelain veneers or Lumineers, you can completely change the appearance of your teeth just a few visits to any of our dentist offices in Lexington.

Veneers also happen to be one of the most versatile cosmetic services available today.

If you have crowded teeth, veneers can fix them. If you have crooked teeth, veneers can straighten them out. If you have gaps in your smile, veneers can close them.

Veneers work sort of the same way as false fingernails … if false fingernails lasted for decades at a time.

With porcelain veneers, one of our dentists will remove some of the enamel from the front of your teeth. We’ll then make impressions so our laboratory can create a customized set of veneers that we can place directly onto your teeth.

If the thought of losing part of your teeth bothers you, then we also offer Lumineers. These are the thinnest veneers on the market, which means they can be bonded directly to your teeth with little or no prep work.

When your porcelain veneers or Lumineers are ready, we will bond them in place. Then you can find out what it’s like to have a perfect “Hollywood” smile.
