When it comes to replacing teeth, dental implants offer unmatched security, durability, and convenience. In fact, they’re as close as you can get to brand new teeth. That’s why more than more than 3 million Americans have chosen to have dental implants placed, according to figures from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.
A dental implant is a small titanium post that is inserted into your gums and acts as a replacement for the root of the missing tooth. After the dental implant is placed, your jawbone heals around it, providing a strong hold — just like your jawbone would provide to a real tooth root.
The dental implant is topped with a custom abutment, which holds a dental restoration in place. That could be a beautiful, custom-made crown, which replaces just the visible portion of a single tooth, or it could anchor a multi-tooth prosthetic. It can even securely hold a full dental arch of artificial teeth to provide an alternative to traditional dentures!
Dental implant-secured dentures require just two dental implants to support a full arch prosthetic, which is removed at night and for cleanings. There are two types:
- Implant-retained dentures. These dentures use ball attachments to snap into two dental implants.
- Implant-supported dentures. These dentures are supported on dental implants with a bar attachment.
No other tooth replacement option besides dental implants replaces the root of the missing tooth. Because of this, dental implants actually prevent deterioration of the jawbone because they continue to engage the jawbone when you chew. That’s not the case with teeth replacement options that only replace the crowns of missing teeth.
If you have one or more missing teeth in a row, a dental bridge is a great teeth replacement option. In fact, dental bridges are one of the most time-tested and reliable dental restorations!
A dental bridge is one or more artificial teeth in a row that literally “bridge” the gap in your smile. They’re anchored by crowns placed on the abutment teeth, the existing teeth on either side of the gap. Because the prosthetic isn’t removable, you won’t have to worry about it accidentally falling out or coming loose when you eat.
A bridge can also be supported by dental implants instead of crowns.
If you need to replace a full set of teeth, you might be wary of traditional dentures, concerned they’ll slip or fit awkwardly. But when you trust Beaumont Family Dentistry with the creation of your dentures, you’ll feel confident knowing they were made just for you. They’ll look natural and fit comfortably. Plus, traditional dentures are a very cost-effective way to replace an entire set of missing teeth.
In addition to full removable dentures, we offer partial dentures. Partial dentures are an alternative to dental bridges for people who are missing a series of teeth in a row. Our partial dentures stay in place with the help of metal clasps for security and comfort.
By just replacing the missing teeth, you’ll regain dental function. You’ll be able to once again eat the foods you love and smile without hesitation.
