Braces, Invisalign®, Fastbraces® …
What do these orthodontic treatments have in common? All of them can be used to make your teeth straight.
You may be an adult who never wore braces but now wishes you have done something to make your teeth straighter than they are today.
You may be an adult who had braces but whose teeth have started shifting toward their original positions.
You may be a teenager who has been anticipating getting braces for some time.
No matter who you are, Beaumont Family Dentistry wants to help. We have patients from Harrodsburg, Paris, Winchester, and all over Central Kentucky who visit one of our three dentist offices in Lexington for orthodontic care.
Why You Might Want Orthodontic Treatment
Why do you think most people have their teeth straightened?
We certainly live in a culture that places a lot of value on having straight, healthy teeth. If you are considering braces or another option for fixing your crooked teeth, then you should take some time to think about why you want to do it.
Knowing the reason(s) that you want straight teeth can help you start and complete the treatment process.
With that in mind, here are three reasons we think you may want to get your teeth in line.
â–º Oral Health
One of the main reasons that dentists recommend orthodontic treatment is because it can improve your oral health.
It’s not magic by any means, but it can make it easier to clean your teeth. That can make your daily brushing and flossing more effective at removing bacteria and plaque. (You are brushing and flossing every day, right?)
Consider someone with crowded teeth as an example. If your teeth are crowded together, then you may have spaces that your toothbrush can’t scrub and areas where your teeth are too tight to fit dental floss between them.
That is a space where bacteria can thrive, build plaque, and start to eat into your tooth. It’s also a prime location for your gums to become infected due to periodontal disease.
By moving that your teeth into a straighter position, you can clean all the space between all your teeth more easily.
â–º Self-Confidence
Look, there is no denying that one of the benefits of orthodontic care is the cosmetic improvement to your smile.
When you look at your smile, what do you see? Do you see a smile that you are proud to flash when someone asks you to pose for a picture? Do you see a smile that you feel confident letting other people see?
Or do you hide your smile so your teeth won’t appear in photos and other people can’t see them?
When your teeth are straight, when you eliminate the gaps between your teeth, when your teeth are not crowded together, you may feel less self-conscious and more comfortable with your smile.
â–º Social Benefits
This is related to the previous issue. You come across as more confident when you are more willing to smile around other people.
And smiling can affect how other people perceive you as well. It’s been said by many people that you only get one chance to make a good first impression.
Think about your own experiences for a moment. Do you feel more welcomed by the person who smiles when he or she meets you or the by the person who never cracks a smile?
Surveys have shown that having a nice smile makes you appear more confident, friendlier and more trustworthy. It also makes you look more attractive as well.
Orthodontic Options
One of the good things about being alive now is that you have a range of orthodontic choices to improve your smile. At Beaumont Family Dentistry, you can choose any of the following treatments:
- Preventive Orthodontics — This is for children at age 8 or 9. This can correct alignment issue before their permanent teeth erupt. This can minimize the time needed for more traditional orthodontic care or eliminate the need for that treatment at all.
- Ceramic braces — These are like traditional braces, but with ceramic brackets that more closely match the color of your teeth.
- Invisalign — Instead of brackets and wires, you could wear clear, plastic aligners to push your teeth where you want them to go.
- Fastbraces — This is similar to traditional braces but with triangular brackets that decrease the time needed to complete your treatment.
