Beautiful straight smiles can help build confidence and better health. As a family practice, we love helping kids achieve the beautiful confident smiles they deserve to have. By survey, parents say that their kids are happier about themselves and smile more often once their teeth are straight. Having straight teeth also helps to avoid future complications with gum disease.
Dr. Patricia Takacs is very experienced in straightening children’s teeth and has considerable advanced training in the technology and utilization of braces for kids. She is equipped to assess exactly what needs to be done to give your child a straight smile and a healthy bite.
Your first step is an evaluation of your child’s teeth, jaw, and bite. Dr. Takacs will thoroughly review treatment options with you and answer any questions you may have. She recommends starting your child with treatment between 8 and 11 years old.
Early Orthodontic Treatment
We recommend that you bring in your child for us to evaluate his or her teeth, jaw, and bite at around 8 years old. The jaw goes through different growth patterns during childhood, and many future bite problems and crooked teeth are affected by how the jaw and muscles in the face grow together at an early age. Having teen braces can be more effective if you use a type of retainer to open the space inside the mouth prior to getting the braces. Retainer treatment, if needed, usually begins at around age 8 or 9 and braces can start as early as 11.
Some of the conditions requiring early treatment are poor bite, protruding front teeth, or too little space for the teeth to come in regularly. We will do a thorough evaluation of your child’s mouth and teeth and recommend any treatment that we feel is needed for the full health and function of their mouth and jaw as well as the future beauty of your child’s smile.
We can work to correct your child’s cross bite, tongue thrusting (abnormal swallowing habits), spacial issues, and more. Seeing children early can help to prevent larger orthodontic problems down the road. This phase of treatment is called Phase I intervention. Phase I intervention can often mean a better likelihood for success during Phase II treatment (braces).
Orthodontic Options for Teens
We provide a variety of orthodontic options. Two options, however, stand out as being great for teens with busy schedules and hallway reputations to uphold. These two orthodontic options, Invisalign and Fastbraces®, are both great ways to get the beautiful, straight smile your child deserves.
Invisalign is a great option for teens because it is invisible. Invisalign clear aligners are nearly undetectable to the naked eye and provide comfortable, convenient treatment. They work about as fast as traditional braces on kids, often even faster.
Fastbraces® are also a comfortable way to get straight teeth. These kids braces work faster than traditional braces (often in less than a year!), and produce less discomfort. If your child wants quick results and doesn’t mind the look of metal braces, Fastbraces® is for them.
