From Our Family to Yours

Doctor [Takus 00:00:01] is actually my mom. She started this practice 30 years ago. My grandmother, her mom, actually works here as well. She makes cookies, coffee, does really more of a comfort aspect for patients before they even make it back into the chair. She also calls patients afterwards to check in on them, make sure everything is going okay. I joined the practice a few years ago, and actually my sister is joining here soon. She just recently graduated, so it really is the Beaumont Family Dentistry. We see families, but it also is a family. A lot of our staff has been here for over 10 years. Some have been here over 20 years. That even is kind of a family aspect as well.

We are a family-centered practice. In fact, Dr. Patricia Takacs’ two children, Drs. Ryan and Kyle Golibersuch, both work for the practice. We understand the importance of family and of making sure they have a dental health care provider that they can trust.

Children love us at Beaumont Family Dentistry, and we love them! Dr. Jill Miller takes care of most of the little folks, treating them with gentleness and kindness. Children can start as early as 2 years old with us, often with visits to just get used to being at the dental office. We have a great deal of experience with children’s dentistry and know how to help a child develop bright, healthy, straight teeth. In addition to services such as pain-free fillings and sealants to prevent tooth decay, we provide braces and spacers for children.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Basically, our philosophy here is we want to treat the entire family from Mom, Dad, kids, grandparents, anyone. I really love seeing little kids. I have young children of my own. I just feel like sometimes you still are a kid, and those kids are great. Many times they have no idea that they have really ever had any work done. They think we use our magic potions. Then we get them to feel silly and their cheeks feel big. I love having a kid that has no idea they’ve had anything done. They just pop out of here, want a toy from the toy chest, and they feel like they have won the world. Kids are great.

We recommend bringing your child in to see the family dentist for the first time at around age 2. Your child’s first visit to our dental office is designed to be a relaxed, getting-to-know-you visit. We call this a “Happy Visit.” During this first visit, we will do only what your child is comfortable doing. Our goal will be to perform a full exam, but we want to make sure your child is happy and relaxed – if she isn’t, we won’t move forward. Your child’s first visit to our office is designed to be a no-pressure situation – for you and your child.

I had the good fortune to have five associates with me, all young doctors. When a family comes in with a newborn or a two year old, a toddler, my doctors are young enough to be able to sit down with those children and just make them feel comfortable. The first visit for a child, typically, is sometimes they don’t even get in the dental chair. I let them play with the squirt gun. I let them use the little suction so they’re not scared of that. You make it a fun visit. I realize that as a two year old or as a three year old they’ve only gone to their doctor and gotten shots, gotten this, that and the other.

When they come here, it has to be a pleasant experience so they’ll want to come back. I think that speaks favorably because they do. They come back and again, that goes back to them growing up in this dental office and then bringing their kids here. I feel like it says a lot about how well we take care of children starting out. The first visit, sometimes it’s just let’s get them used to it. If you have that very exceptional two year old that will let you polish their teeth or tickle their teeth clean … They always get a toy. It’s just a fun visit. We just make it fun.

While you are here, your child will be allowed to get acquainted with the office, equipment, and staff. This is also a great time for parents to ask questions. Parents are, of course, allowed to stay with their child if they would like to – this often helps your child feel more comfortable and relaxed. We try to be as accommodating and helpful as possible, ensuring that you and your child have a pleasant experience at our office.

Services for Young People

For parents, oftentimes we forget how early we actually need to start taking care of their teeth. Children are really good about, they love to stick everything in their mouth, so why don’t we stick a toothbrush in there even before they have teeth so they’re used to having something in there. Right in the beginning, oftentimes I’ll even take a washcloth and just kind of rub their gums and then start taking care of those teeth.

Many kids won’t let us take a peek at them, but when they’re about two years old is really when we start recommending that you bring you them in. Oftentimes it’s just with the parent. They bring them in, maybe even sit on their lap or just watch a little bit and see what’s going on, and sometimes they’ll just sit there and open their little mouths and want you to look and count, and we will. We will take advantage of whatever situation they give us.

For most parents, many times we hear, “Oh, well I’m not going to fix that. It’s going to fall out anyway. This just is a space saver.” If we start taking out every baby tooth or if they start hurting …” Who wants their own child to hurt? We want to make sure that they’re feeling pain-free. Fillings are not that big of a deal for a kid. They usually laugh and giggle. Sometimes the work is a little bit more extensive. More importantly bacteria can move around a mouth. It can go from a baby tooth to a permanent tooth, and so if we don’t take care of all of the problem we have now created a much worse problem for the child. It’s a lot easier to take care of it when they’re young and get in there to brush and floss their teeth. I mean the kids will let you. I know there’s a period of time where they will fight you, but they will let you.

Dr. Takacs is highly trained and experienced in the straightening of teeth and can see your child as young as 9 to get an early start on a beautiful smile. We can do this by utilizing space maintainers. Space maintainers are a type of retainer that develops space for crowded teeth so that when the permanent teeth come in, there will be room to create movement with braces or Invisalign. This can set your child up for success in their orthodontic treatment (or even prevent the need for it) later down the road.

We do see children here, we usually get them in when they’re pretty young, we just want them to get comfortable and familiar with the dental environment so we bring them in for a cleaning. We count their teeth with them, take X-rays if we can, and just do a little bit of cleaning and get them comfortable, and let them know that we’re not going to hurt them, that everything, that it’s fine. They always get a toy at the end so they like that. We just try to make them really comfortable in case they need any treatment.

We also offer pain-free fillings for children. Cavities can form as young as 3 or 4 years, and we keep a close eye out for any signs of decay. We use a DIAGNOdent laser for early cavity detection and can fill the tiny holes without any injections and without any pain. We also offer nitrous oxide sedation for kids who are nervous about having dental work.

When a parent brings a kid for the first time, the best thing is not to bribe them. Don’t say anything bad about a dentist. Don’t let them even see your fear, if you’re fearful. Just tell them how much fun it’s going to be and that we’re going to brush their teeth for them and they’re going to see all kinds of new things. They’re just going to have fun.

They don’t need to know that it’s another doctor. We always tell them we’re just going to count your teeth and we’re going to look. If the kid’s not having it, we’re going to make the best try that we can and have fun in the room and let them get used to some of the things that they’re seeing. Sometimes we don’t clean their teeth the first time. If they’re not going to let us, we do not want them to have a bad experience.

Oftentimes, if they do need treatment, they’re coming to see the doctor, I would especially say don’t let them know they’re ever going to have any sharp instruments near their mouths. We take care of that and so many times a child has no idea what has taken place. We are really good about making sure everything is hidden and we don’t talk about those things. We don’t lie to them, but we don’t talk about it.

Sealants and fluoride treatments are also great for kids because they protect the teeth from decay and disease. Participating in these protections early in your child’s life will help them keep a healthier smile longer.
