Understanding Bruxism And Its Effects
As noted in our quiz, many people with bruxism are not aware of what they are doing or when they are doing it.
The most obvious example is when people do this in their sleep. This also could explain why you may have headaches when you wake up or why you wake up with a sore jaw.
Unconscious actions can occur when we are awake, too. Many people clench their teeth without thinking about it as a reaction to stressful situations. And we all experience stress because of work, because of bills, because of personal matters.
No matter when or why you clench and grind your teeth, you are putting added pressure on your TMJ and on the muscles and tendons that support. Because your muscles are interconnected, this can explain the headaches, earaches, neck pains, and shoulder pains that you may experience because of a TMJ disorder.
How TruDenta® Can Help
TruDenta® is a four-phase approach to addressing the underlying cause of headaches and migraines that may be traced back to your bruxism and TMD.
The first phase lasts 8 to 12 weeks and takes place in one of our three dentist offices in Lexington. During a one-hour weekly appointment, we will help you learn to relax your jaw with muscle therapy, microcurrent electrostimulation, and ultrasound therapy.
The second phase occurs during this same time period. At home, you may use cold packs, lotions, medicine, and more to help you relax.
The third phase includes wearing a mouthguard. This can be worn at night while you sleep. the guard will keep your jaw in a relaxed position. It also prevents your top and bottom teeth from touching one another, so you can’t grind them together.
The final phase is force balancing (and no, it doesn’t have anything to do with Star Wars). This therapy is intended to keep the pressure on your TMJ more equal from all directions. This can eliminate pain and other long-term issues.
