The next time you are at the grocery store, pick up any celebrity magazine. At the very least, take a good look at the cover.
The featured entertainer of the week will be posed nicely with a big smile on his or her face. It might even be a family photo with lots of smiling faces. You will notice their pearly white teeth.
This has become a cliché — the Hollywood smile. You may wish for a smile like that.
You may have had one years ago, but your teeth have become yellowed with time. You can get that smile again with veneers.
Whether you live in Richmond, Lexington, or anywhere in Central Kentucky, our team at Beaumont Family Dentistry wants to show you what our veneers can do.
What are veneers?
Veneers are like a fresh coat of paint, a new set of siding, or the fabric you might use to reupholster a couch or chair. They change the outside appearance of your teeth, while leaving the healthy natural teeth underneath.
Veneers can resolve a number of issues with the appearance of your teeth.
We mentioned yellow or stained teeth above. This may have happened because of foods you’ve eaten for decades or because a lifelong love of tea, coffee, or soft drinks.
Whatever the reason, veneers can give you back a white and natural-looking smile.
For people who may not like a gap between their teeth, veneers can solve that issue, too. This will give you the appearance of uniform spacing between all your teeth.
Other people have teeth that are crooked, chipped, broken, or misshapen in some other way. Veneers can hide those parts of your smile behind a front that looks as straight as can be.
Getting your veneers
For more than 30 years, our Dr. Takacs has been giving smile makeovers to her patients. She’s seen how veneers can change both the appearance and the attitude of the person who receives them.
Veneers are made of porcelain, which is both durable and similar in appearance to natural teeth. Most patients can also take advantage of our Lumineers veneers, which require little or no prep work on your teeth.
Lumineers are wafer-thin but very strong. If you choose to receive Lumineers, you’ll make two visits to our office.
During your first visit, we will assess your teeth, make a mold of your teeth, and decide what shade of white you want your teeth to be. That information will be used to create Lumineers veneers that are custom designed to fit your teeth.
During your second visit, we will bond the veneers to your teeth.
We also offer e.max and Empress veneers. Depending on your particular teeth, we may need to remove a thin layer of enamel to prepare your teeth for veneers. This way, when the veneers are bonded to your teeth, they will fit perfectly and look and feel like your original teeth.
Veneers offer another benefit as well. They are soft on your gums, and they offer protection to a tooth that may have already been damaged. This may save your tooth from further infection.
A whiter smile
Today’s veneers are stain-resistant and can last up to 20 years, but that doesn’t mean you can neglect your regular oral hygiene.
To keep your mouth healthy and your veneers looking their best, you should still brush and floss every day. Remember to brush twice a day for two minutes each time and to floss once per day. If you have questions about flossing with veneers, please ask our dentists. We welcome your questions.
Try to cut back on consuming stain-causing foods and drinks. Wine, tea, coffee, and sugary drinks can cause stains.
Likewise, you should avoid using tobacco products. Cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and dip are bad for your health and bad for your new veneers.
Also, remember to keep your regularly scheduled dental appointments. Keeping your whole mouth healthy will help your veneers keep looking great.
